Mission & Vision:

To nurture and further a dynamic, values-based environment which utilizes our historically Latino based fraternity as a catalyst to better serve the needs and wants of all people.

Sigma Lambda Beta History:

Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on April 4, 1986 at the University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa by 18 men based upon the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Cultural Awareness, and Community Service. Our Founding Father, Baltazar Mendoza Madrigal, a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, wanted to provide for Latino students the same opportunities he saw Phi Beta Sigma provided for African American collegiate men. Twenty-eight years later, Baltazar, along with our 17 other founding fathers, Thomas Carasquillo, Manuel Chavarria, Luis Jimenez, Luis Marquez, Mario Buendia, Enrique Carbajal, Rudolfo Garza, Jose Fong, Eric Montes, Olakunle Oyeyemi, Kuy Ou, Jaime Ramirez, Olivero Rivera, J.J.R.C., Eugenio Soria, Juan Valdez, and Ricardo Zamudio, has since created an organization committed to creating and expanding multicultural excellence in academics, leadership, and cultural awareness and service. Today Sigma Lambda Beta has become the largest historically Latino Greek –lettered intercollegiate fraternity in the nation with over 140 entities consisting of colonies, chapters, and alumni associations coast to coast.

Alpha Beta Chapter History:

"The Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. was established at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities on April 10th, 1999 and has been active ever since for a total of 22 years and counting.  We have grown to be one of the most diverse chapters within our organization and our campus. We pride ourselves in our Latino roots and the cultural diversity of its brothers. United with common values and principles. We believe that everyone has something to offer and strive to challenge personal growth and accomplishment. As of today we have 130 Brothers who have joined through our chapter which has created a large international network."

Philanthropy:

Stampede for Scholarship

"The brothers of the Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity have awarded a $500 academic scholarship to an incoming college freshman for each of the past four years (2007 – 2010). The scholarships were awarded to University of Minnesota students as a result of our partnership with the Bridge to Academic Excellence program. In 2010, we were notified the U of M would no longer offer the Bridge program and evaluated establishing a partnership with another college program. Our Board of Directors decided to pursue a partnership with the St. Paul Public Schools given the strong connections we have to the school district and to Humboldt High School specifically.

In earlier years the scholarships were funded by contributions of our own Brothers. However, as the cost of a college education has increased we also set out with the goal of increasing the amount of the scholarship, from that grew the Stampede for Scholarship – the belief that united we stand, divided we fall.

We host the 2nd Annual Stampede for Scholarship Walk, which is 5K WALK to raise money for the scholarship. Each participant is asked to contribute $15 as admission/donation. In exchange participants receive a t-shirt, food, and the opportunity to come together and walk for a common cause."
