History of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was founded on January 15th, 1908, making it the first African-American sorority founded within the Divine 9. Alpha Kappa Alpha’s purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of Service to All Mankind. This is fulfilled by 280,000 college-trained women and over 1000 chapters.

History of the Mu Rho Chapter

The Mu Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered March 25, 1979 at University of Minnesota -Twin Cities. Since 1979, Mu Rho has flourished in many areas including sisterhood, academics, and service. We serve the on-campus community through events such as Skee Week, our annual midnight breakfast, and study nights. We also serve the Twin Cities community by volunteering for college preparation initiatives, initiative to address world hunger, such a Feed My Starving Children, and more. We value the importance of integrity, responsibility, and respect, which help us to keep our sisterhood strong.
